What Is Operational Excellence? Principles and Examples
Operational excellence means delivering value reliably and efficiently while improving continuously. Learn the principles, frameworks and tools.
ISO 9001 is the international standard that sets requirements for a quality management system (QMS): the processes, responsibilities and records an organization uses to deliver products and services that consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements. The current edition is ISO 9001:2026, published in September 2026, which replaces ISO 9001:2015; existing 2015 certificates remain valid during a transition period. Organizations of any size and sector can use it, and many seek certification to show customers and tender committees that they manage quality systematically.
ISO 9001 is built on seven quality management principles that ISO describes in ISO 9000, the family’s fundamentals and vocabulary standard:
It follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.
ISO 9001 gives organizations flexibility in documentation, but most certified systems include:
Write documents for the people who use them: short, visual and easy to update.
Timelines vary with size and maturity; many small and mid-sized organizations prepare within several months.
| Standard | Focus |
|---|---|
| ISO 9001 | Quality management |
| ISO 14001 | Environmental management |
| ISO 45001 | Occupational health and safety |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | Information security management |
| ISO 22000 | Food safety management |
These standards share a common high-level structure, so organizations can build an integrated management system that covers several of them with one set of processes, audits and reviews.

Yes. It applies to any organization that delivers products or services, including consultancies, hospitals, logistics firms and government entities.
Yes. Publishing ISO 9001:2026 does not cancel existing ISO 9001:2015 certificates. Certified organizations move to the new edition within a transition period set by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), usually at a surveillance or recertification audit, so agree the timing with your certification body.
