What Is Data Analytics? The Four Types, with Examples
Data analytics turns raw data into answers. Learn the four types (descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive) with simple business examples.
Business intelligence (BI) focuses on reporting and monitoring what is happening in the business, mostly through dashboards and standard reports. Data analytics goes further, explaining why things happen and predicting what comes next. In practice the two overlap, and most organizations need both: BI to run the business day to day, analytics to improve it.
| Business intelligence | Data analytics | |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | What happened? What is happening now? | Why did it happen? What will happen? What should we do? |
| Typical output | Dashboards, KPIs, scheduled reports | Analyses, models, forecasts, recommendations |
| Users | Managers and staff across the business | Analysts, data scientists, decision-makers |
| Time focus | Past and present | Past, present and future |
| Data | Structured, well-defined metrics | Structured and unstructured, often exploratory |
| Tools | Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Qlik | SQL, Python, R, statistical and ML tools |
Think of BI as the dashboard of a car and analytics as the mechanic and the navigation system. BI shows that fuel consumption has risen; analytics finds out why and suggests a better route. Both depend on the same foundation: well-organized, reliable data.
For most organizations, start with BI: agree on core metrics, connect key systems, and build dashboards people use. This forces clarity on definitions and data quality. Then add analytics for the questions BI raises, such as why one branch performs better than another.
| Function | Dashboard examples |
|---|---|
| Executive | Revenue, margin, cash, headcount and key risks on one page |
| Sales | Pipeline, win rate, sales by product and region, top customers |
| Finance | Budget vs actual, receivables ageing, cash position |
| Operations | Output, lead times, backlog, quality and on-time delivery |
| Customer service | Volumes by channel, response and resolution times, satisfaction |
| HR | Headcount, turnover, absence, training completion |
A good dashboard answers a few specific questions for a specific audience, shows targets and trends, and links to detail for those who need it.
Self-service BI lets business users build their own reports instead of waiting for IT. It speeds up insight and reduces backlog, but without guardrails it can recreate the problem BI was meant to solve: many versions of the truth. Balance freedom with control by:
Power BI is mainly a BI tool, but it also supports some analytics features such as forecasting and custom calculations.
Not always at the start, but as the number of data sources grows, a central data store makes reporting faster and more consistent.
Usually a central data or BI team working closely with business owners, who remain responsible for the definitions and use of their KPIs.
