What Is ESG? A Plain-Language Guide for Companies in Qatar
ESG stands for environmental, social and governance. Learn what each part covers, why investors and customers care, and how companies in Qatar can start.
A sustainability (or ESG) report is a public document in which an organization explains its environmental, social and governance impacts, how it manages them, and how its performance is changing over time. A first report does not need to be perfect. It needs to be honest, based on real data, and focused on what matters most to your business and stakeholders.
Are you reporting for investors, lenders, large customers, employees or the public? The audience shapes the framework, level of detail and format.
| Framework | Best for |
|---|---|
| GRI Standards | Broad reporting on impacts on economy, environment and people |
| ISSB (IFRS S1 and S2) | Investor-focused sustainability and climate information |
| Stock exchange guidance | Listed companies; in Qatar, the QSE guidance on ESG reporting |
| SDG mapping | Showing contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals |
Many first reports use GRI and add a climate section aligned with ISSB.
Identify the ESG topics that matter most, for example energy and emissions, health and safety, employee development, data privacy, and ethics. Talk to employees, customers, suppliers and leadership, and rank topics by importance to stakeholders and impact on the business.
Decide which entities, sites and period the report covers (usually one financial year). Collect data for each material topic:
Document sources and calculation methods so the data can be checked.
Report not only where you are, but where you are going: targets, timelines and the actions planned to reach them.
A clear structure:
Use plain language, charts and real examples. Explain bad results as clearly as good ones.
Have the data reviewed internally, and consider external assurance for key figures as your reporting matures.
| Indicator | Unit | Previous year | Current year | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electricity consumption | MWh | |||
| Scope 1 and 2 emissions | tCO2e | |||
| Water consumption | m³ | |||
| Waste recycled | % | |||
| Lost-time injuries | number | |||
| Training hours per employee | hours | |||
| Women in workforce | % | |||
| Employees trained on code of conduct | % |
Showing two years side by side, with units and targets, makes the report credible and easy to compare.
| Months | Activities |
|---|---|
| 1 | Agree purpose, audience, framework and team |
| 2 | Materiality assessment with stakeholders |
| 3–4 | Data collection and checks |
| 5 | Targets, narrative drafting, design |
| 6 | Review, approval and publication |
Starting data collection early in the year makes the next report much easier.
Quality matters more than length; many first reports are 20–40 pages including data tables.
It is optional for many companies but increases credibility. Requirements are growing for listed companies.
Annually, aligned with your financial year, so progress can be compared.
